Have a Look at New Thai Brand Packaging that Participates in the Project with DITP

A pain point being one of the big issues of many entrepreneurs is the matter of the packaging that the selection for use or designing is not suitable for the distribution, transportation or sales promotion method, particularly, the exporters which have still been facing the entangled problems on trade regulations from many large country group that focus on environmental impact and the state of being the BCG (Bio-Circular-Green).

Department of International Trade Promotion or DITP, therefore, joins hands with the Thai Packaging Association to organize the “Promotion Activity on the Creation of Added Value through Packaging System Management and the Use of Environmentally-Friendly Packaging or Circular Packaging towards BCG under the concept of The Future is Circular” to enhance potentials of Thai exporting entrepreneurs to adapt and readily be prepared for a strong entry into the global trade through packaging changes being in compatibility with the global market trend by having a group of Experts consisting of Ms. Pattra Khunawat, Deputy Secretary-General of the Thai Packaging Association, Mr. Chotinarin Wipada, Thai Packaging Association Expert, Asst. Prof. Thanarak Chantraprasit. Head of the Department of Industrial Art, Faculty of Architecture, Art and Design, King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, Mr. Suphadej Himamaan, Head of Product and Packaging Design Division, Faculty of Architecture, Art and Design, Naresuan University and Mr. Theerachai Suphameteekulwat, Founder and Director of Qualy Brand Design, taking part in providing the in-depth consultancies to the entrepreneurs participating in the activity and helping them with the designs of new packaging model which is somewhat interesting in a variety of product groups.

Lifestyle Product Group:

Most of the problems are that the packages are unnecessarily oversized, thus, resulting in the unnecessary waste of the materials and requiring to use large amount of plastics, foams, or anti-shock papers eventually causing the waste to pile up and the use of materials that are difficult for recycling. In addition, a lot of glues and masking tapes are used. Because the packaging does not help in the sales promotion at the point of sale, such packaging is therefore adjusted to fit the products, however, it is still strong. The box structure is designed for easy folding, forming and sealing which greatly help in reducing the use of the glues and masking tapes. Moreover, the packaging can also help to show off the products.

In Home Furniture: the household furniture manufacturer, has redesigned to improve features of the product packing cartons that used to have many parts, to have only 1 piece of the environmentally friendly paper boxes remaining left, but, they still can protect the products well. The type of the box opening is readjusted to reduce the use of masking tapes; the used boxes can also be modified to become document trays.

Earthtone Brand Shoes: Features of the boxes have been modified to properly fit the products with paper packages to fit the boxes for sending them via postal services and graphics added to indicate the products on the box making it easier to find the boxes. The design is also made to be able to bring the boxes for cutting into slippers and packages that can be made into paper bags, as well.

Up2herb Handmade Soaps: Plastics and papers wrapping the products have been changed to bio-plastics. The coated packaging is changed to a non-adhesive lockable Kraft paper. The packing type of big boxes is adjusted from 20 pieces to 18 pieces to properly fit the products, so that no cushioning material is required. It can also be used as sales promotional display.

Malailux Aroma Diffuser is redesigned to make use of a piece of the aroma diffuser paper as an anti-shock piece, in reducing the packaging size to suit the bottle size, thus, allowing the number of standard shipping boxes to be stacked from 16 to 40 boxes.

Sea Value Public Company Limited, the OEM manufacturer for various brands, has readjusted the box structure to make use of papers more cost-effective. The adjusted perforated folds increase strength in transportations.

Rukbartik’s boxes have been designed anew to be able to continue to store batik cloths and able to show off the products at the point of sales (Reusable). The leftover materials from the manufacturing process become part of the new packaging (Upcycling). The label is designed to be separated from the box for easy recycling.

Food Product Group:

The problem found in this group of the products is that the food pouches made from the combination of plastics and metals cannot be separated for recycling. They can be disposed of by burying or incinerating only. Some brands use foil pouches that cannot protect the products from light, thus, reducing the shelf life of the products. Or the original packaging that even they are still papers, they cannot protect the products during the course of transportations well enough. So, the experts have helped to solve all these problems.

Mantra Plant Based Seafood has replaced the vacuum nylon plastic pouches with  aluminum foil trays and PE sealing lids that are 100% recyclable.

Bamboo Shoot Soup Noh has made a new change in its features from the plastic pouches to a 100% recyclable paper cup in order to make the product consumptions more convenient and ideally suitable for consumptions in the hustle and bustle of urban people by printing patterns on a sheet of paper then folding it up and connected it with ultrasonic sound to make a paper cup. Inside is coated with a separable PE plastic film when it is to be recycled.

Lucky Egg Brand: Its packaging structure has been redesigned to support against all kinds of shocks in all sides to better protect the products. Egg trays are made of recycled papers.

ProChef Junior Dried Fruits have adopted new sachets for use that reduce the use of foils. They are made to be the plastic packages where the volume of the packing contents is divided into portion suitable for consumption at a time. The sizes of the product boxes for both 250 grams and 500 grams types have been redesigned to prevent the products from being damaged and exposed to light. Standard crates can also be used with all other products of the company. Where Starry Dried Fruits boxes have been redesigned with the size to fit the products and the size of the paper corrugations reduced but are still weight bearable. The use of adhesives and masking tapes is also lessened to reduce environmental impact.

Coconut-Derived Snack Cups: It is a change in the material to be 100% recyclable for the whole bags. The size of the inner and outer packages is adjusted to be in compatibility with one another where the box for containing many pieces is designed with perforations with the top cover can be removed to show off the products.

Beauty Product Group:

In addition to the problem of the product containing boxes that are not strong, the matter of the packaging bottles that some brands are too thick and therefore need to use a large packaging eventually causing the unnecessary waste of the materials or the use of colored bottles to prevent the light exposure, but, affect the environment as well as the use of the labels with excessive printing techniques, is yet another problem.

Akaliko Skin and Hair Care Products: Containing bottle has been redesigned by reducing the thickness of the bottle, but, still being strong. Where the box is redesigned to contain more than one size of the product to reduce quantity of the paper and type of the box required for use and minimize the use of special printing techniques.

Helios Facial Products: Containing bottle has been changed to an amber glass bottle to protect the products from light exposure, reduce cleaning steps when materials are needed to be recycled. Paper tubes are used instead of the boxes to prevent the external shocks, which can be reused after the products have been used. Tear-resistant packaging label is used to prevent the bottle from being opened before selling.

Praow Shampoo and Conditioner Bar: The redesign has been made to have a wrapping paper for shampoo or conditioner bar to prevent grease from leaking out. This will help extend the product shelf life. The packaging structure is redesigned to be stronger with a box to combine the units to be suitable for distributions and can also be a sales medium when placed on the product shelf.

All these are just only the samples of the idea on changing the packaging that in addition to taking the matter of the environment into account, it also helps in the sales promotion, as well. For entrepreneurs who are interested in participating in such good activity like this one in the succeeding year, pertinent details can be followed up through the Office of Innovation Promotion and Value Added for Trade, Department of International Trade Promotion on website: www.ditp-design.com and www.ditp.go.th
