Department of Intellectual Property Backs up Entrepreneurs to Redesign Their Packaging, Upgrade Their GI Products to Meet Global Market Demands.
Department of Intellectual Property has continued the Thai Geographic Indication (GI) Packaging Development Project for the 8th consecutive year by selecting entrepreneurs of 10 GI products to join hands with the award-winning designers at the national level to jointly develop packaging for GI products with an aim to enhance their potentials, tell the stories of the GI products through modern packaging that meets global market demands and create added value for the GI products.

Ms. Kanitha Kungsawanich, Deputy Director-General of Department of Intellectual Property, revealed that “the Geographic Indication or GI is one of the intellectual property protections for quality and famous community products that have unique characteristics resulting from the geographical conditions, climate, and local wisdom. In addition, GI is a tool to create added value for local products, generating income for the country of more than 73 billion Baht per year. The Department of Intellectual Property is therefore committed to proactively promoting GI products in all dimensions, including GI registration, product quality control, marketing promotion, and creating added value for GI products to improve the quality of life for farmers, GI producers and entrepreneurs, and to drive the overall economy of the country for sustainable growth.”

Ms. Kungsawanich gave her additional account that “The Geographic Indication Packaging Development Project is an activity that the Department has continuously implemented since 2017 as part of the marketing promotion and value-added creation for GI products. The packaging is comparatively like the face of the product that will attract consumers’ attention first and also plays an important role in protecting and maintaining the product quality, leading to the creation of added value for the products, creating an image and differentiation from external appearance, and meeting the needs of domestic and international consumers. This year, the Department has selected 10 GI entrepreneurs of the products as follows: Siamese Ruby Pomelo from Pak Phanang (Nakhon Si Thammarat Province), Prachin Durian (Prachin Buri Province), Mae Sin Orange (Sukhothai Province), Pak Chong Khao Yai Durian (Nakhon Ratchasima Province), Pala-u Durian (Prachuap Khiri Khan Province), Thepsadet Coffee (Chiang Mai Province), Thung Kula Rong Hai Jasmine Rice (Yasothon Province), Bo Sang Umbrella (Chiang Mai Province), Songkhla Lake Three-water Sea Basses, and Phrae Moh Hom Fabric, to join hands with national award-winning designers to jointly design packaging for GI products and produce packaging for entrepreneurs to create added value and upgrade GI products to meet the needs of consumers. including increasing competitiveness and creating product differentiation.”

Department of Intellectual Property has been proactively working to increase the capabilities of GI entrepreneurs in creating readiness to open modern trade markets and opportunities for exporting abroad to bring income back to local communities and drive the grassroots economy sustainably.
