BAERLOCHER SHOWCASES ITS TIN REPLACEMENT INITIATIVE FOR A MORE SUSTAINABLE PVC INDUSTRY

For decades, tin-based stabilizers played a crucial role in the PVC industry. However, due to evolving environmental regulations and sustainability goals, they are now being replaced by more eco-friendly and safer Calcium/Zinc-based systems. Baerlocher’s Tin Replacement program, which pioneers this transition, provides customers worldwide with a broad range of benefits, supporting their move toward greater sustainability. From October 8 to 15, Baerlocher welcomes visitors to the K 2025 to learn more about this program at its booth A21 in Hall 5.

“Tin was the perfect PVC-component of its time. Today, greener, safer, and more regulation-friendly systems are taking its place”, said Mustafa Ataman, Head of SBU PVC EU/MEA/US at Baerlocher. “We not only embrace this shift—we are driving it forward with transformative, sustainability-led innovation, resulting in pioneering technologies. To this end, we combine global expertise with local knowledge to serve our customers worldwide as a trusted advisor.”

With its Tin Replacement program, Baerlocher aims to drive the industry’s transition from tin-based to calcium-zinc systems—not by waiting for regulatory mandates, but by setting new standards. The initiative offers global customers the following benefits:

  • Full compliance with REACH, RoHS, and other global regulations

  • Safe use in drinking water, food contact, and medical applications

  • High-performance calcium-zinc based alternatives

  • Tailored technical support for seamless conversion on existing production lines

  • Solutions aligned with recyclability and circular economy principles

By combining the strengths of plastics with environmental responsibility and smart technology, Baerlocher is shaping the future of the industry in the era of the circular economy. Compared to traditional tin stabilizers, calcium-zinc based systems offer:

  • Significantly lower carbon footprint (50 % CO₂-eq./kg reduction possible)

  • Improved regulatory acceptance—no authorization needed

  • Cost-effective production with no additional handling costs

  • Cleaner recycling streams and safer occupational exposure profiles

Smart Transition with BAEROSTAB and BAEROPAN

Baerlocher’s BAEROSTAB stabilizer family provides optimized solutions for switching from tin-based systems. BAEROPAN represents sustainable and innovative additive systems specifically designed for rigid PVC applications. Key advantages of these products are:

  • Full compatibility with existing equipment—no further investment required

  • Approval for use in potable water, food packaging, and medical segments

  • Support for post-consumer recycled (PCR) content

  • Consistent performance in color retention and mechanical strength

Applications enabled by Baerlocher’s calcium-zinc based stabilizers include pharmaceutical films, potable water pipes, and fittings. These products are manufactured using a wide range of processes, from calendering and extrusion to injection molding.

High Performance, Safe Production

Baerlocher’s solutions are tested under real-world processing conditions. They deliver reliable thermal stability, excellent UV resistance for long-term outdoor use, they guarantee consistent mechanical properties—ensuring both production continuity and effective cost management.
