Cortec has unveiled its new EcoBio Barrier Paper, a ‘recyclable, re-pulpable, biodegradable’ barrier paper without PFAS or intentionally added plastics.

 

According to the company, EcoBio Barrier Paper starts its product life cycle as 100% recycled paper stock coated with a biobased (90-100% renewable organic carbon per ASTM D6866) and biodegradable (per OECD 301) barrier coating. It can be recycled through normal paper recycling streams and tackles moisture and grease resistance without the risk of plastic or foil pollution.

 

Cortec says its EcoBio Barrier Paper and Linerboard can be used in a variety of short-term packaging applications where moisture or grease is a concern. The company adds that the new paper can help keep products dry as shipments pass through unpredictable environments with fluctuating humidity and weather patterns. It can also be used to line wooden crates or cardboard boxes, keeping goods out of direct contact with the potentially damp walls of the package.

 

In related news, UPM Specialty Papers and Royal Vassen have collaborated to create ‘recyclable and food-safe’ barrier paper solutions for various end-use applications, designed to address requirements including oxygen and moisture barrier properties. UPM’s Solide Lucent packaging paper solution is said to minimize the coat weights required and offer the strength to perform efficiently on high-speed lines.

 

In September, Heidelberg and Solenis partnered on a process said to enable the ‘industrial, partial and cost-effective’ application of barrier coatings to paper packaging. The collaboration aims to utilize Heidelberg’s individual Boardmaster assemblies for applying Solenis’ barrier coatings, in order to make the process technology quickly and easily available to packaging producers.
